"The markets would not be able to offer free food but for the volunteers who assist in setting up and helping families at each market."

A Committed Volunteer

Over a six-month period, Karen B. has volunteered in about 12 markets—primarily at the Joyful Food Markets in Southeast D.C., operated through a partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank. Joyful Food Markets are monthly “choice markets” where volunteers help children and their families shop for free quality food—including produce. The markets would not be able to offer free food but for the volunteers that assist in setting up and helping families at each market. Karen’s daughter attends Anne Beers ES, the site of one of the markets, which is how she first found out about the markets.
